Once upon a time, highly skilled basketball players came out of Birmingham, and C.M. Newton rebuilt the Crimson Tide using those players. When Newton retired and was replaced by Wimp Sanderson as head coach, one of the things he inherited with the job was two-year starter Eddie Phillips, one of those Birmingham natives.
